Program Description
The Experience Matters AmeriCorps Program seeks to decrease reading difficulties and increase the joy of reading to K-8 students attending Title I schools in an Out-of-School Time (OST) program setting. The program was founded on evidence-based research, and encompasses the desire to provide caring and trained support to students suffering from the negative impacts of pandemic learning loss.
The Experience Matters program supports new and existing tutoring programs across Metropolitan Phoenix and Maricopa County, by providing Academic Mentors that will deliver an evidence-based reading program based upon The Science of Reading. The Science of Reading includes 5 Pillars of Reading Instruction: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. This program has been developed to build students’ literacy outside the classroom, and highlights evidence-based curriculum used across the country. Our team is comprised of a Lead Academic Advisor (research-based), a Lead Engagement Officer (engagement and activity building), and Academic Mentors–who provide all on-site programming to students.
