At Waste Not, one of two brands of the United Food Bank, we cultivate sustainable food systems that help people and the planet flourish. We do this by rescuing prepared and nutritious food, delivering that food to agencies that feed our neighbors and redirect food waste to environmentally friendly destinations like farms and composting operations. During these processes WN builds innovative community partnerships with those who deliver food assistance and those who assure food waste is responsibly utilized. A great deal of time, money, and resources go into growing, rescuing and delivering nutritious food. Yet, each year, 40% of that food is thrown away. At the same time, nearly 1 million people in Arizona are struggling with food insecurity. We are transforming this broken system by connecting tens of thousands of Arizonans with quality food that would have otherwise gone to waste. By reimagining what’s possible for food rescue and food waste, WN assists in making our communities and our planet healthier. 

Position Summary: 

The WN Executive Director is the leader responsible for executing Waste Not (WN) strategies created by United Food Bank leadership and ratified by the WN Board of Directors. The WN Executive Director’s responsibilities include driving philanthropic growth, implementing a new pay-for-service business model, actively managing WN results that are consistent with annual budgets while acting quickly and responsibly to recommend and drive corrective actions that support continued achievement of WN annual goals. The Executive Director will be visible as a representative of WN and United Food Bank at functions and in the media. They will be responsible for updating the Waste Not board monthly on WN progress and will actively work with United Food Bank groups that provide support to WN including retail food rescue, operations, transportation, finance, philanthropy and marketing.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise, assess performance and develop the WN Development Manager consistent with the Development Manager job description. Drive any necessary corrective actions as needed
• Act and be recognized as the leader of Waste Not’s growth efforts in providing more healthy food to agencies that assist hungry neighbors in partnership with established food rescue teams
• Take the lead in creating new and innovative tactics to implement fee-for-service food rescue and food waste reuse models while always monitoring results and driving modifications as needed. These tactics are reviewed and approved by the senior leader.
• Drive WN results (philanthropy, revenue and expenses) that meet annual budget goals. This requires acting promptly to gain support and drive any corrective actions needed to meet WN budget goals
• Partner with our marketing team and the WN Development Manger to develop messaging, materials, and engagement opportunities targeted to grow relationships with WN donors
• Manage and create collaborative results with matrixed internal support organizations (marketing, philanthropy, operations, finance, transportation, food rescue)
• Provide regular updates monthly to the WN Board of Director and the UFB Leadership team as needed. Executive Director will lead regular WN Leadership Team meetings.
• Ensure that the WN organization is providing services that delight donors, partner agencies, clients and neighbors

• Passion for alleviating hunger and aligning with our United Food Bank mission and values as well as the mission of Waste Not
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Public Administration and/or Non-Profit Management or equivalent leadership/management responsibilities (fundraising, business tactical development, supervision and P&L management) or equivalent combination of education and experience; Master’s degree a plus
• A minimum of three years of non-profit leadership or product management experience, with business development and organizational profit and loss responsibilities a plus
• Ability to segment and organize data to create a cohesive narrative that drives continuous organizational improvement
• Excellent verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both internal and external situations. Media message creation and delivery experience a plus
• Intermediate computer skills and comfort level with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), Canva and Salesforce or other CRM databases 
• Ability to be professionally autonomous and also work and lead within a team both in and out of the office environment
